Pierce Bush

Pierce Bush, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, is the leader of the largest Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate agency in the country, reporting to the agency’s Executive Board of Directors. Pierce is tasked with leading the strategic objectives of the agency, leading and working with his dedicated staff team across a wide swath of Texas.

Pierce started his journey with BBBS as a volunteer mentor to Jaylyn in 2009, and he was appointed to the Houston Regional Board in early 2012. Believing that Big Brothers Big Sisters embodies a mission that represents the American spirit of volunteerism and service to others, Pierce left his career in private equity to join the Houston market staff full-time in October of 2012, becoming the Houston Market President in 2014. Since Pierce joined the organization, the Houston market has increased its program reach, measured by kids impacted, by almost 63%. Through Pierce’s leadership, Big Brothers Big Sisters lone Star completed construction and fundraising on a new, highly visible, mission enhancing $8 million Houston headquarters building near downtown.

After achieving local success in the Houston market from 2012-2015, Pierce was appointed CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star by the Executive Board, in August 2015, with the goal to build on this positive track record and impact more children across the state in Lone Star’s territory. Under his leadership, the Lone Star agency launched the new strategic plan Vision 2×22 that will guide the agency in doubling its reach by 2022. In 2016, in Pierce’s first full calendar year as CEO, the consolidated Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star agency turned a corner financially and celebrated a cash flow positive year for the first time since the merger in 2010.  In 2018, all markets across Lone Star strategically grew program numbers at roughly 8% growth rates year over year and growth across all major markets was achieved.  In 2018, the Lone Star agency also leaned into open book, transparent management operating systems to empower staff as owners in the mission and the agency now runs one of the most transparent operations of any non-profit in the state and country.  For these open-book scoreboards and systems and the results they have generated across Lone Star for the kids positively impacted, the Lone Star agency has been recognized with an All-Star Award by the Great Game of Business Association in 2019.

Under Pierce’s direction, the agency also started using third party data from the National Student Clearinghouse to measure our mission’s impact at defending the God-given potential of kids in our program.  In the third year of tracking this data, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star is finding that over 86% of our kids who graduate high school in our professionally supported, one to one mentoring programs are enrolling in a two year or four year college or trade school in the year after high school graduation.  When looking at broader outcomes, 97.5% of our high school graduating Littles/Mentees are enrolled in college, enlisted in the military or employed in their first year after high school. This data clearly shows to our generous donors and volunteers the impact their precious gifts of treasure and time make when invested through our agency and outcomes achieving mission, and it shows the reason we need our mission to grow and defend the potential of more kids across Texas.

Pierce earned a BA in American Studies from the University of Texas in Austin. Originally from Houston, Pierce splits his time between Houston and DFW to support Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star efforts in north Texas. Since 2018, Pierce was appointed by peer CEO’s and serves on the governing Board of the federation of Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate agencies, the Nationwide Leadership Council.  Pierce and his Little Brother Jaylyn enjoy attending church at Ecclesia together, playing baseball, riding bikes, and volunteering in the community. Pierce has been recognized by Houston Business Journal as the youngest member of the 40 under 40 class of 2016 and as an inaugural recipient of the Most Admired CEO award in 2018. Pierce is married to Sarahbeth Bush, who is also a Big Sister in the program, and together they are the parents to a golden retriever named Winston Moose.

Pierce can be reached at 713-860-8214 or pierce.bush@bbbstx.org.
