BBBS Announces Additions to the Executive Board

October 19, 2016 – Dallas, Texas – Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star announces additions to the Executive Board of Directors. Former Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Pat Quarles have joined as directors and Steve McDaniel, previously a director, has been elected chairman.

CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, Pierce Bush, states, “This represents a pivotal time for Big Brothers Big Sisters. These new Board members bring outstanding leadership experience and a passion for the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission. They reflect a key component of the recently adopted strategic plan: to bring statewide connectivity, understanding, cooperation, and a deep appreciation of the needs of kids facing adversity across our great state. Considering we cover half the state of Texas, having a well-respected former Lieutenant Governor in David Dewhurst now on the team will be an asset to our organization and the kids we serve. I am also pleased to have Pat Quarles join our Board, as Celanese Corporation is a major partner of ours and has a major presence in the greater Dallas and greater Houston service area. Steve McDaniel is the perfect Chairman for our Executive Board at this juncture, as he is one hundred percent dedicated to creating a successful organization and has so much experience building organizations.”

Newly elected chairman, Steve McDaniel, states, “On behalf of the thousands of kids we serve and their families, the thousands of heroic “Big” volunteers, our dedicated staff, our Executive and Regional boards, and all of our supporters and stakeholders, I’d like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to former chairman, Jim Wales, for his years of selfless service to Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star and for his vision and tireless efforts in setting the agency on a path to sustained growth and improved effectiveness.”

Former Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst is Co-founder, Chairman & CEO of Falcon Seaboard. He served his country and the State of Texas, first as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, then in the CIA, and in 1999 as Texas Land Commissioner, and Lieutenant Governor of Texas from 2003 to 2015.
Mr. Dewhurst began his career in business in the early 1980s. He started his own company, Falcon Seaboard, but like so many other Texas businesses at the time, he lost nearly everything when the oil and gas and real estate markets went bust. He gradually built back all that he had lost and more, and earned his reputation as an innovative, tireless and successful businessman.
During his tenure as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Dewhurst was chief architect of the “Texas Miracle,” the largest sustained economic expansion in state history. He cut state taxes 54 times for almost $16 billion, reduced state spending and maintained the lightest possible regulatory hand as a way to make Texas irresistible for investment and job creation.
He maintains his commitment to serving the people of Texas through engagement in public policy and continued involvement in Texas philanthropic groups and their endeavors.
Mr. Dewhurst received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona, where he played college basketball, and attended Georgetown University Law School.

Pat Quarles of Celanese Corporation is the Executive Vice President and President, Acetyl Chain and Integrated Supply Chain. Mr. Quarles has leadership responsibilities for Celanese operations in both the Dallas and greater Houston areas. He has 25 years of experience in the chemical industry, beginning his career with ARCO Chemical/Union Carbide in 1990, where he held various positions in sales, marketing and business management.

Mr. Quarles earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Clemson University in 1989 and a master of management from The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 1995.

Steve McDaniel is a private investor focused primarily on the natural resources sector. Mr. McDaniel currently serves on the Board of Directors of Ultra Petroleum Corporation, Encino Energy, and Bazean Corporation, all energy-related companies in Houston.
Mr. McDaniel founded Midstates Petroleum Company, where he served as its Chairman and CEO until the company’s IPO in 2012. Prior to Midstates, Mr. McDaniel spent nine years in the financial services and investment banking industry, principally with Merrill Lynch.
Mr. McDaniel began his career with Conoco (now ConocoPhillips) where he spent 13 years in various engineering, operations, engineering management, and business development roles.
He holds a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering.
