(HOUSTON, April 30, 2018) Houston Astros Pitcher and MLB World Champion, Lance McCullers Jr, is stepping up in a BIG way for Houston-area children in need of a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston, led by CEO Pierce Bush, are thrilled to partner with McCullers as the mentoring organization’s first local Big Champion.
Big Champions are local celebrities who embody a passion for the mission and who value the power of mentorship. As a Big Champion, McCullers has agreed to serve as an ambassador, advocate and spokesperson for Big Brothers Big Sisters to create more public awareness of the importance of mentoring and helping to mobilize potential new supporters. McCullers will be instrumental towards recruiting volunteer mentors, raising funds to effectively vet and enroll those volunteers, and provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for volunteer mentors (Bigs) and their mentees (Littles) once they are matched.
“Lance McCullers embodies what it means to be a leader and positive role model for children. We greatly appreciate his energy and enthusiasm he brings to our mission to help us serve more children in Houston. He’ll be particularly helpful in attracting more men to volunteer as we have a waiting list of over 900 children, most of whom are young boys who need a dire need of a positive male role model.”
As a Big Champion, McCullers and Big Brothers Big Sisters are teaming up to launch a new pledge it campaign, Ahead of the Curve, where McCullers fans and BBBS supporters can make a donation for every McCullers strike out in the 2018 season. More information on the campaign will be announced in the near future.
